THE BUFFALO
MORDAUNTS My father Lawrence P Mordaunt was born in Terra
Haute,IN. in 1922 while my Grandparents performed "Shakespeare" on
the road. The family settled in the Buffalo, NY area in ~
1926. He wed my mother Mary Frances O'Rourke in 1946 and had
thirteen children of which I was the third.
Thanks to information
provided to us by other Mordaunts around the world, we are getting
closer to putting the pieces of the puzzle together. We are certain
that our family came from Ireland although many references to
MORDAUNT shipbuilder's of England can be dated to the early 1800s as
well as MORDAUNT - SHORT SPEAKERS, also from England. Our "BRANCH"
is believed to have come from Wexford County, Ireland eventually
settling into the Western New York area in the 1920s. My Grandfather
Walter "Hal" Mordaunt is believed to have come from the San
Francisco, Ca. area. Hal traveled the country as an actor in a
number of different "Companies" including working for George M Cohan
in the early 1900s. Hal spent a lot of time in Key West, among other
places, but not much else in known of his life prior to 1900. His
first (?) marriage produced at least three children, one of which
Hal (jr.) became a prominent Artist and only recently passed away
(2000) in southern Florida. Hal (sr.) married his second wife
Margaret Ryan and had thee children, Peggy Mordaunt (Herzberger),
Walter Mordaunt, and my father Lawrence Mordaunt.

Hello friends
Thanks for your notes. For what it is
worth here is the first installment
on
our side of the family.
As we
know it, two brothers (unnamed) fought alongside William the
Conqueror in the Battle
of Hastings in 1066 when William defeated Harold the Great of
England. After the battle, William dubbed them both as knights
naming them "Mordaunt" meaning "the hewer of heads" (they were good
swordsmen). You can obtain details from such works as "Burke's
Peerage and Lineage" which outlines the histories of nobility in
England. It shows that the Mordaunts have been in positions
of privilege since the 11th century and members of the House of
Lords up to the 20th century. Cemeteries in southern England
are full of them (many better dead than alive
unfortunately).
The
family motto is "Ferro Comite" meaning "My sword, my
companion". We'll try to send you a copy of the coat of
arms.
In more modern times, Lord Nigel Mordaunt in
the early 1800's lived in Ireland (any connection with you?) and
died as a result of a fall from his horse. His wife remarried,
much to the disgust of his youngest son (Elijah Mordaunt) who
proceeded to run away to sea at the age of 12 around 1852. He became
a gifted ship's carpenter in the British navy and served about 30
years. Upon retirement he bought a small farm in Grimsby,
England, married and had 5 boys and 5 girls. Our lot started
here with the eldest son, Joseph Robert Elijah Mordaunt who was a
successful businessman in the wholesale fish markets in Grimsby and
Liverpool. Joe died in 1943 and had two families. First
he had 3 boys George, Joseph and Leonard and 2 girls, Doris and
Edna. Second "family" comprised my dad Eugene David, Paul and
Maria. My sister and I both live in Toronto as do my mother
(Doris) and father.
Let's keep in touch , Best regards
Gene and Dad
